Arguing With Myself About Team Sky

I was once told my view on Team Sky’s dominance – and jiffy bags – was balanced and refreshing. I don’t like Sky, but I try not to obsess on one collection of riders. I’d rather talk about key moments in races, winning moves or bold tactics. I’ve also been told my view on Team Sky is dull and inconclusive. I don’t make my mind up. I don’t love Chris Froome (he’s never been my preferred race winner) but nor do I condemn him.

If somebody asked me which team have won six tours in the last seven years I’d say Team Sky with no hesitation or caveat. Unfortunately, alarm bells have been ringing almost the entire time. Following Geraint Thomas’ victory at this year’s Tour – a race where Froome looked surprisingly human, but former E3 Harelbeke winner Thomas delivered a flawless climbing performance – it’s time to make my mind up on the issues which make the Sky regime quite so dubious.

Paris-Roubaix: L’enfer du Nord

It is around this time every year that Paris-Roubaix arrives. It’s one of the races that riders will circle in their diaries or in the case of Bradley Wiggins this year- the only race. It’s a race so expansive in history that it carries an aura that the other Monuments can’t quite match. They may be longer, hillier or older but they don’t take riders from Paris to Roubaix and they aren’t referred to as the ‘Queen of the Classics’. This year’s race is likely to crown a new champion- unless holder Niki Terpstra can repeat his 2014 effort.

The history of The Hour Record

Earlier this month Tour Down Under champion Rohan Dennis continued his impressive start to 2015 by breaking the World Hour Record with a distance of 52.49km, quite comfortably ahead of Matthias Brandle’s mark. But recent history suggests he may not hold the record for long. The popularity of the World Hour Record, with its latest rules, is growing and the list of rumoured challengers in the next 12 months is full of strongmen hoping to write their name into the history books.
